چکیده
Context Predation of layer chickens is a major issue for free-range egg producers. Using livestock guardian dogs (LGD) to protect free-ranging poultry possible option producers, although there little published literature regarding how the chickens. Aims This case study was conducted at production farm in Western Australia, where red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) were common predator prior introducing Maremma LGD. We investigated LGD responses experimental cues that might indicate fox incursion (fox urine and calls). Methods Four GPS tracked monitored using camera traps. Over first week, set out around paddock boundaries, alternating with ‘non-cue’ control nights. recorded whether altered (1) their space use, (2) activity patterns (movement speed), or (3) behaviour response these cues. also (4) distances between from known sightings foxes. Key results The Maremmas appeared work independently each other, covering separate areas. There no significant difference overnight home range area by cue treatment, but (P < 0.001) treatment × dog interaction term distance moved. Three spent most time night chicken shelters generally increased moved on fourth more bonded people did not alter its movements. Paradoxically, rested barked less nights; however, we traps placed 17 23 nights monitoring, high background level this property compromised our (nights without cues). move towards sightings. Conclusions trial closely guarded rather than maintaining entire as predator-exclusion zone. Implications Understanding behave when challenged potential predators will help increase producers’ confidence efficacy viable method predation threat.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Livestock and Poultry
In 2008 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated that only 6.4% of U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions originated from agriculture. Of this amount, 53.5% comes from animal agriculture. Agricultural activities are the largest source of N2O emissions in the U.S. accounting for 69% of the total N2O emissions for 2009. In animal agriculture, the greatest contributor to methane emissions ...
متن کاملWhere Do Livestock Guardian Dogs Go? Movement Patterns of Free-Ranging Maremma Sheepdogs
In many parts of the world, livestock guardian dogs (LGDs) are a relatively new and increasingly popular method for controlling the impact of wild predators on livestock. On large grazing properties in Australia, LGDs are often allowed to range freely over large areas, with minimal supervision by their owners. How they behave in this situation is mostly unknown. We fitted free-ranging Maremma s...
